Hunger Strikes 2026

In May and June 2026, detainees at multiple ICE facilities reported coordinated hunger strikes over medical neglect, sanitation, food quality, and prolonged detention. Congressional delegations visited Adelanto following strike reports; New Jersey officials filed suit seeking health-inspector access to Delaney Hall. DHS and GEO Group have publicly denied strike and abuse allegations at Adelanto.

Detainees at the GEO Group–operated Adelanto complex report an ongoing hunger strike protesting sanitary conditions, delayed medical care, unsafe drinking water, and prolonged detention. On June 2, 2026, reporting indicated the strike had expanded to the East wing; on June 4, family members and advocates reported strikers placed in solitary housing units after refusing meals.

Delaney Hall Detention Facility

More than 300 women and men detained at Delaney Hall in Newark reportedly began a combined labor and hunger strike on May 22, 2026. Strikers cite medical neglect, spoiled food, lack of sanitation, denial of bond, and pressure to sign voluntary departure or deportation documents. Outside the facility, protesters supporting the strike have clashed with ICE and local law enforcement.
